Worship

In God’s presence I’ll dance all I want! . . . Oh yes, I’ll dance to God’s glory-more recklessly even than this. And as far as I’m concerned . . . I’ll gladly look like a fool...” (2 Samuel 6 v21-22)

David knew how to worship- he wasn’t concerned with how he looked, what others thought of him, or what it would do to his reputation. His one desire was to worship the living God. This should be our attitude as well. Too often we allow culture, opinion and embarrassment to hinder glorifying our God, but we are called to so much more than this. We are called to worship God in spirit and in truth. This does not mean that we must all conform to a certain standard, or that there is one right way of worshipping the Lord. What God is after is our hearts! If raising your hands and dancing about is how you want to express your love for your God then go for it! If sitting quietly, reflecting on the majesty of the King is how God gets your worship, don’t let anything hold you back! We want to become a C.U. that creates an environment where people are free to worship God with honest and reverent hearts. What is vital is that we take the focus off ourselves and give all the attention to our God. Worship is not about us, or how we feel- it is about letting God know how good He is!

Worship comes in all different forms and we often fall into the trap of seeing worship simply as singing songs. Worship is simply glorifying God and giving Him the honour He deserves. This can be done through singing, through playing hockey, through going to the pub with your mates or whichever way you want to glorify Him. When we meet to sing songs to God as a C.U. we do not want these songs to be our one way of glorifying the Lord. We want our sung worship to be echoes of our worshipful lives. We know that God would much rather we are people who live to His glory in lectures etc than a people who sing songs to Him without ever glorifying Him with our lives.

Our prayer is that as we grow and mature as God’s people and as a C.U. we would learn more and more what it is to worship this living, loving and incredible God that we have. Let us learn to become more and more like David; not concerned with what other people think, but to seek to honour the Lord in all that we do.
